Kildalkey Captain David Dolan (right) retains the Ryder Cup from Marcies in 2016

2016 Ryder Cup v Marcies

The 5th edition of the Annual Ryder Cup event between Kildalkey GS and Marcies (Trim) took place on Saturday 17th September, 2016 at Knightsbrook Golf Resort, Trim. Kildalkey retained the cup by a score of 10.5 - 7.5 and in so doing are the first to win the series back to back.

Kilalkey and Marcies 2016Congrats to Captain David Dolan and his team on a fine performance, as the title was still in the balance with Marcies 1up with the last two teams still to come in. Four points from four in the final pairs showed either a genius Captain's choice of pairs and start positions or just pure luck. Refreshments and presentations were held in Marcies, Trim. So now, no pressure on our 2017 Captain to again retain the Cup in Kildalkey.

Headford New (Captains Day) - 03/09/2016

Captains winner Anthony Quinn (right) with Captain David Dolan presenting.

Our Captains Day competition was held in Headford (New Course) on a wet and dreary Saturday 3rd September 2016. Thirty four braved the conditions which included five visitors. The Society broke new ground on the day with the inclusion of our first female player in the guise of Bridge Guy aka "Daniel O'Donnell". We hope now the ice has been broken that more will join us in the future. We also welcomed back Ian Kennedy after a year out.

Anthony "Chippie" Quinn emerged victorious with back to back Captains on a score of 36. Brian Carroll and James Monaghan were second and third respectively separated on a count back with a score of 32. Cormac "cut-again" Reilly, Brian Giles and Jim O'Neill took 4th to 6th placings.

Captains DinnerBrian Carroll netted the longest drive with Captain David Dolan nearest the pin. Mick McGrath won the visitors prize. There was a three way split for the 2's with C.Reilly, M.McGrath and B.Guy carding a 2.

Captains Dinner Following dinner, Captain David Dolan made his presentations and welcomed back Ian Kennedy and also Brige Guy our first female player. He also thanked the committee for their efforts during the year and our event sponsors, namely Oliver Henry Electrical, Stephen Kelly - Kinside, the Carroll brothers - Progressive Plumbing and Cormac Reilly - Arch Plumbing & Heating.

Following formal proceedings, a good night was had back at the Snug House. There is small matter of our annual Ryder Cup with Marcies (Trim) on the immediate horizon and the eagerly awaited first trip to Portugal in October followed by our last outing in November for the Turkey shoot which will unveil our golfer of the year for 2016.

Druids Glen - 09/07/2016

Druids Glen winner William Monaghan (centre). Event sponsor Brian Carroll presenting and Captain David Dolan.

A return to Druids Glen didn't disappoint as conditions were excellent. Thirty one made the trip which included seven visitors. Humid and blustery at times, as thankfully the rain held off and sunshine ensued after the front 9. Young William Monaghan emerged as victor with a score of 38 points. New member Alan Mc'Nally claimed second spot on 35 points with Bill Hayes throwing back the years in third with 34 points.

One of the bridges in Druids Glen GC Category winners were C1 - Brian Heverin, C2 - Cormac Reilly and C3 - Brendan Corrigan.

Brian Heverin bagged the longest drive - again, with visitor T. Flattery nearest the pin. Eamonn Gilsenan was best on the front 9 with event sponsor Brian Carroll on the back 9. The visitors prize went to J.Ayres. Bill Hayes and Brian Heverin shared the 2's.

Everyone got home dry and happy to relate there was no repeat of last years fiasco unlucky dip on the 12th. We take a summer break now until Captains day in Headford on September 3rd.

Powerscourt winner Brian Giles (centre) with Cormac Reilly event sponsor presenting and Captain David Dolan

Scenic Powerscourt (East Course) presented a stern test in good conditions with twenty five making the trip to Wicklow, which included four visitors. Brian Giles emerged victorious with a score of 37 points. Jim O'Neill bagged second spot on 33 points with event sponsor Cormac Reilly claiming third place on 31 points.

Category winners were C1 - Brian Carroll, C2 - Stephen Skelly and C3 - Tommy Collins. Brian also landed the longest drive with captain David Dolan nearest the pin.

Powerscourt Outing Sponsor c/o Cormac Reilly No fewer than nine two's were carded as follows: T.Carroll, J.O'Neill, T.Darling, D.Dolan, B.Duignan, K.Stewart, M.McGrath and C.Reilly with 2 two's.

We return to Druids Glen for our next trip to the scene-of-the-crime river intrusion by Richie De-Lake who is now fully equipped for any repeat wetting thanks to the members. He's willing to offer assistance to Brendan Corrigan, should he need it.

Moyvalley - 14/05/2016

Moyvalley winner Brian Heverin (left) with Stephen Kelly event sponsor presenting.

Our third outing was held in sunny and balmy Moyvalley. Conditions were a taster for the Portugal trip it was that good. Twenty nine played on the day which included four visitors. The spoiler for the day however was the course had been sanded recently and greens were not great. Even so scores were pretty good. Golfer-of-the-year 2015 Brian Heverin won the day with a score of 38 points. That sees him break into the single figure handicap in good company. William Monaghan took second spot on 36 points with Stephen Kelly a close third, on a count back, with 35 points.

Brendan Corrigan Category winners were C1 - Anthony Quinn, C2 - Des Gray and C3 - Karl Stewart. For the second time in a row, Brian Heverin ousted James Monaghan's longest drive effort. Tom Collins was nearest the pin and he also claimed the front 9. Back 9 went to Eamonn Gilsenan. The visitors prize went to Ian Dowd with a score of 35.

2's were carded by Bernard Duignan and Peter Kelly who shared the spoils. Powerscourt is our next venue on the 18th June.

Poor Brendan Corrigan (left) bit off more than he could chew. For every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action. The water didn't take kindly to being hit with a club and took revenge.

Slieve Russell - 09/04/2016

Slieve Russell winner Brian Carroll (centre). Oliver Henry event sponsor presenting with Capt. David Dolan.

This seasons second outing took us to scenic Slieve Russell in Cavan and was kindly sponsored by Oliver Henry. It was a bitterly cold 4c but dry nonetheless. Twenty seven made the trip. Brian Carroll put his stamp on things by winning with a score of 40 points. Another member of the 40 club. It was a high scoring day with a back-to-back second place going to Cormac Reilly on 38 points followed close in third by Brian Heverin on 37 points.

Category winners were C1 - Trevor Darling, C2 - Steven Kelly and C3 - William Monaghan. Brian Heverin also bagged the longest drive with a cracking strike on the 18th to brush aside James Monaghan's effort. Trevor also took nearest the pin for a prize sponsored by Ian Kennedy. Front 9 went to Des Gray with the back 9 going to Captain David Dolan.

Brendan Corrigan had all the 2's to himself with two of them on his card. Moyvalley is our next encounter on Saturday 14th May.

Cormac Reilly finished second on 33 points with Bernard Duignan completing third spot on 32 points.

Captain Tom Carroll presents the GOY Trophy to Brian Heverin (left)

2015 Golfer of the Year

The Golfer of the Year went to Brian Heverin with a GOY score of 140 points. Trevor Darling finished second with 137 points just pipping Anthony Quinn on the same score. Anthony managed to improve his GOY score by 10 points on the final outing at Royal Tara GC. The only significant mover on the day. Full list of placings is featured on the GOY page.

The AGM will take place shortly in the Snug House. A draw will be held on the night for free membership for 2016 and a free drink for those in attendance.

Royal Tara - 14/11/2015

Royal Tara winner Anthony Quinn (left). Capt. Tom Carroll presenting

Our last outing of 2015 took place at Royal Tara GC. Tee off was at 10:30am. Eighteen managed to make it on the day, which included two visitors. Conditions were ugly with the course being described as virtually unplayable due to the amount of rainfall. We persevered however, and Anthony Quinn took the honours with a good score of 37 points given the conditions. In fact, he managed to make a significant leap in terms of his GOY standings with a third place finish. Placings are as follows:

Pos. Name Pts.
1 Anhony Quinn 37
2 Tom Carroll 32
3 John O'Connor 30
4 David Dolan 28
5 Trevor Darling 28
6 Michael Collins 28
7 Jim O'Neill 26
8 James Monaghan 24

The longest drive and nearest the pin winners weren't awarded due the failure of the course to put the usual facilities in place. The golfer of the year standings were still up for grabs, with a few contenders able to affect the outcome. But Brian Heverin managed to hold on to top spot despite a rib injury, as no one was able to improve their score, excepting the days winner, Chippie Quinn who leap frogged into third spot. Congratulations to Brian on his victory.

We retired for afters back in the Snug House were a sing-song session broke out with Richie DeLake (Delea) sporting his quitar. Its now the end of Tom Carroll's reign as captain and we move onto 2016 which will include an historic Society trip to Portugal in October. The AGM will be held in the coming weeks.

Kildalkey Captain Tom Carroll (right) receives the Ryder Cup from Marcies in 2015

2015 Ryder Cup

The 4th edition of the Annual Ryder Cup event between Kildalkey GS and Marcies (Trim) took place on Saturday 3rd October, 2015 at Rathcore GC. Kildalkey were victorious on this occasion with a rather large margin of victory by a score of 13-5. It is the 3rd time in 3 years that the cup changed hands with neither side having managed to retain it since inception. The only blot on the copy book of the day was that John O'Connor failed to score a single point. We look forward to a renewed challenge in 2016. Refreshments and presentations were held back in the Snug House with thanks to Sean and Jackie for the food.

Anthony "Chippie" Quinn took the honours with a great score of 39 points. Just one short for the 40pts club jersey. Brian Carroll presents to Druids Glen winner Brian Heverin (right).

Our Druids Glen outing lived up to its billing with glorious sunshine on a great course in fabulous condition on Sunday 14th June. Thirty seven travelled which included 7 visitors. The outing was sponsored by Progressive Plumbing Ltd. and represented by Brian Carroll who presented on the day. All got home dry except for one who took the plunge, and ended up in the river that runs thought it. His story is that "he was pushed" and he shall remain nameless (Richie Delea).

Brian Heverin won the day with 38 points on a count back from Trevor Darling in second spot. David Dolan took third with 36 points. Category winners were C1 - T Carroll (Capt.), C2 - S.Skelly and C3 - T.Collins.

Longest drive went to Cormac Reily with another Cormac, this time Foley nearest the pin. The front 9 went to Thomas Gethin and John O'Connor bagged the back 9. Visitors prize went to Jamie Duignan. There were 3 winners of the 2's club and they were Jamie Duignan, Jody Corrigan and Cormac Foley.

Finally there was a 40 point shirt presentation to Karl Stewart for his performance in Glasson. Captain Tom Carroll gifted the Baby Grow as per pic.

Glasson GC - 16/05/2015

Captain Tom Carroll presents to the Glasson GC winner Karl Stewart.

Our third outing of 2015 took us to Glasson GC on the shores of Lough Ree. Thankfully we had a dry day and the course lended itself to some high scoring. Twenty seven made the trip to Glasson with thirteen staying overnight sampling the delights that Athlone had to offer. A good night was had by all ending up with a ballad session in the residents lounge of the Radisson Hotel.

Karl Stewart took the honours with a great score of 40 points. Luckily, a urine sample proved negative. David Dolan took second spot with another good score of 39 followed in third by Kevin Allen with 37 points.

Category winners were C1 - B. Duignan, C2 - S.Kelly and C3 - J.O'Connor. Brian Giles nabbed the longest drive with Des Gray bagging nearest the pin. Front 9 winner was Martin Hickey with Bill Hayes fronting up on the back 9. No visitor prize was awarded.

The Heritage - 25/04/2015

Captain Tom Carroll presents to The Heritage winner Stephen Skelly

Our second outing of the season saw a return to The Heritage where the weather was the reverse of last year. Conditions were testing again with the cold wind and driving rain numbing fingers and hands with lumbago suffers almost ceasing up. Things eased on the back 9 with scores reflecting the difference. 35 players took the test on the day which included three visitors.

Stephen Skelly took the spoils with a score of 39 points followed closely by our captain Tom Carroll with 38 points. Brian Heverin took third spot with 35 points. Brian was also presented with his 40 points special edition Society top which he achieved at Headford New last November at the Turkey Shoot. Category winners were C1 - Justin Corrigan, C2 - Trevor Darling and C3 - Ian Kennedy. Jody Corrigan also took the longest drive with playing partner Anthony Quinn bagging nearest the pin.

Front 9 and back 9 winners were Stephen Kelly and Brian Carroll respectively. D. Lenihan won the visitors prize. Those carding 2's was split three ways between James Monaghan, Anthony Quinn and Tom Carroll.

We move on to our overnight outing on 16th May playing in Glasson and residing in Athlone. Please make it known to the committee if you plan on staying asap, as the booking needs prompt confirmation.

Baltray GC Co. Louth - 28/03/2015

Captain Tom Carroll presents to Baltray winner William Monaghan

The first outing of the season proved to be a tough test at Baltray GC. The gale force winds spoilt what would have been pleasant conditions despite the overnight forecast. Control of blown over trolleys not to mention the moving ball on the greens and trying to tee off between gusts proved testing. Thankfully the rain held off until proceedings were over which would really have spoilt the day.

A new winner emerged in the guise of a delighted William Monaghan with a respectable score of 28 given the conditions. John O'Connor took second with Trevor Darling taking third spot. John and Trevor also had 28 points with the 3 spots being decided on a countback. Category winners were C1 - Jim O'neill, C2 - Cormac Reilly and C3 - Karl Stewart. Stephen Kelly won the front nine with Kevin Allen taking the back nine. Michael Collins was the longest driver on the day with John Kearney being nearest the pin. John also won the 2's club. 27 members took the trial on the day with no visitors.

We move on to The Heritage at the end of April.

Kildalkey GS & Marcies Captains exchange Ryder Cup 2013

2014 Ryder Cup Changes hands again

Marcies (Trim) took back the Ryder Cup trophy from Kildalkey GC on Saturday 11th October, 2014 which was played in Co. Meath GC.The score was 9.5 to 8.5. Kildalkey just needed a half point from the final group to retain the cup, but it wasn't to be. The morning foursomes started out in foggy conditions, which lifted for a fine afternoon in the singles. The cup may well have been retained before the final group completed, as a wrong ball was played earlier in the day and the game was conceded to Marcies.

Kildalkey lost the morning foursomes by a score of 4 to 2, but by mid afternoon had clawed that back and were up 5 to 3 in the singles and all square in the other match. That made it 7 a piece with all to play for over the last remaining few holes covering three matches. But Marcies emerged victors this year. The overall score is now 2-1 to Marcies and we hope to even that up in 2015.

Scores to follow.

The next 2 places also tied on 36 points went to a count back. It was anticipated that a 40 pointer would be carded, but wasn't to be. Here is the full list of honours:

  2. Justin Corrigan
  3. Tom Carroll
  4. Stephen Kelly
  5. Stephen Skelly

Rathcore GC - 12/04/2014

Captain Mattie Lynch presents to Rathcore winner John Darby

The seasons second outing to Rathcore saw 35 players turn up for a 2:00pm start made up of 31 members and 4 visitors. A slight drizzle before the first tee off dissipated to reveal some pleasant sunshine. Midway through, clouds rolled over and a cool wind prevented what could have been some high scoring.
Visiting member and former local publican, John Darby, took the spoils with a score of 35 points. Anthony Quinn took second spot from Stephen Kelly in third, on a count back, with 33 points. Category winners were David Dolan, John O'Connor and Mattie Lynch (capt.) Longest drive went to former Captain and visitor Ray Murray. New member Ray Gunning took nearest the pin. Aidan Bagnall won the visitors prize. The 2's was split four ways between David Dolan, Anthony Quinn, PJ Ward and Kenny Wymes.

Former Captain from 2007, Ray Murray, was presented with a Society Captains shirt. Three members who had scored 40 points or over in the past were presented with the Societies 0ver 40's shirts. They were Ian Kennedy, Trevor Darling and John O'Connor. The evening continued back at the Snug House, for some, where another game of darts broke out.

Killeen Castle - 23/03/2014

Captain Mattie Lynch gets the 2014 season off at Killeen

Our first outing of the new season kicked off at Killeen Castle with new Captain Mattie Lynch opening proceedings with the first 3 ball of the day on the Championship course. We had a great turnout with a field of 35 which included 2 new members and the return of 8 former members. Former local publican John Darby joined us having come all the way from Galway. Weather was crisp but dry to start, with a cool breeze keeping temperatures down. There was a nasty shower just as the field completed the first 9 which when cleared, dampened the wind and upped the temperature a bit.

Returning member Tommy Masterson took the honours with a first place score of 35 points. New member Cormac Foley took second on a count back from PJ Ward taking third spot. Category winners were Derek Doogan, Brendan Corrigan and Karl Stewart. Longest drive went to another new member, Brian Herevin and Stephen Skelly taking nearest the pin. Martin Hickey won the 2's Club. There was no visitors prize as all 35 out had joined as members.

New Captain Mattie Lynch played a stormer in making his first presentations of the new season to all the winners at Killeen. The evening continued back at the Snug House with light refreshments (as if) and post mortems. Then a game of darts broke out where new partnerships and rivalries were formed.
