AGM Report 2016

Dear members,

Our AGM was held in the Snug House, Kildalkey on 16th February 2017 and we were delighted to have an attendance of 16 members. Attendees were James Monaghan, Martin Blake, Michael Collins, Karl Stewart, Richie Delea, Bill Hayes, Tom Carroll, Stephen Skelly, John O'Connor, Peter Kelly, Anthony Quinn, David Dolan, Brian Giles, Ian Kennedy, Brendan Corrigan and Thomas Gethin.

Our Secretary John O'Connor opened the meeting by welcoming those in attendance. He thanked our outgoing Captain, David Dolan on his successful year and most especially the retention of the Ryder Cup over Marcies in October. John congratulated and listed the winners throughout the year. He thanked our sponsors, Brian & Tom Carroll from Progressive Plumbing, Stephen Kelly from Kinside Ltd. UPVC Windows & Doors, Cormac Reilly from ARCH Plumbing and Heating, Oliver Henry Electrical and Sean & Jackie from the Snug House.

Courses and Tee Times for 2017 were announced and are listed below.

Outgoing Captain David Dolan then addressed the meeting, saying John had just mentioned some items and he said that such was the standard of play during the year that 38points was not guaranteed to win on any given day. He welcomed 2 new members to the 40's club namely Brian Carroll and William Monaghan. He congratulated William on his achievement of winning the Golfer of the Year. David also thanked our sponsors, as mentioned above. He welcomed back Ian Kennedy to the fold. David's highlight was retaining the Ryder Cup and he mentioned the successful trip to Portugal. He also welcomed the first lady to play with us this season in the name of Brid Guy and said we are now officially no longer a unisex Society.

David then thanked the committee, especially Karl Stewart and John O'Connor for their efforts throughout the year which was met with a round of applause. David then expressed the Society's condolence to John O'Connor on the recent passing of his father. He thanked everyone for their support during the year and then introduced the new captain for 2017 in the guise of James Monaghan.

The Treasurer's report followed and was given by outgoing Treasurer Karl Stewart who outlined that the Society's finances were in a healthy state and that deposits were paid for this years outings. He thanked John O'Connor for coming up with the idea of holding a Table Quiz, which raised €750 of which €300 was donated to MS Ireland.

John then thanked three members from the committee who were stepping down this year, namely Trevor Darling, Karl Stewart and Mattie Lynch. They were thanked for their contributions during their time on the committee and were given a round of applause. Nominations were then taken for new members of the committee and the following were welcomed on board:

Martin Blake - nominated by John O'Connor and seconded by Tom Carroll
Peter Kelly - nominated by John and seconded by James Monaghan.
Brendan Corrigan - nominated by Martin Blake and seconded by Ian Kennedy.

As there were no nominations for the vacant position of treasurer, the committee will look after the Society's finances until an appointment is made.

John then announced that the committee had decided to review the handicap system as it hadn't been reviewed for some time. John asked the handicap secretary Richie Delea to outline the proposed new system. Richie handed out to those present a supporting document of how the new handicap system will work. The cutting of shots for winners and for placed and category winners, will be replaced by a % cut as follows:

Placings Handicap Change +/-
1st -15%
2nd -10%
3rd -5%
Category
Winners
-5%
4th - 6th place
on Captains
& Turkey Shoot
-5%

The above calculation will be known as Rule 1.

Score Handicap Change +/-
0 - 15 +0.8
16 - 25 +0.6
26 - 30 +0.4
31 - 34 +0.2
35 - 37 no change
38+ - 0.3 per point

The above calculation will be known as Rule 2.

Rule 2 will be applied for everyone after Rule 1 has been applied.:

Included in Rule 2 is the deduction of 0.3 per point for a score of 38 or more. So the calculation of a members handicap will be

Rule 1 and +/- Rule 2.

Also for the 2017 season, handicaps will be allowed drift out to 36 and will be reviewed for 2018 and beyond. The committee will be allowed to tweak the percentage cuts and or score range handicap increase for the purpose of applying the Rules going forward.

These changes are meant to aid each member, of whatever ability, so that each has an equal and fair chance to be successful within the Society and so that cuts do not effect either low or high handicappers unequally.

A short discussion ensued on the proposed new system. It was suggested that the new system could be too penal for a 40+ score and that this was a Society and not a GUI run club. A vote was then taken and the proposal to change to the new described handicap system was passed unanimously. The Society Rules and Regulations are now amended regarding the adopted Handicap system.

Next item up for discussion was the position of Society President. John informed the AGM that the position had been left drift for some years now and was due to be revisited. Bill Hayes, one of the original founding members was nominated and elected unanimously. The Powerscourt outing in 2017 is to be played for the Presidents Cup.

This years Table Quiz has been pencilled in for 31st March following last years successful event.

Outgoing captain passed the baton to new Captain James Monaghan and wished him well for the coming year. James thanked David for the past year and expressed the hope to get a 3-in-a-row Ryder Cup victory this year.

John then outlined to the meeting the etiquette required of members in the upcoming first outing at the European Club on the 11th March.

Other items discussed were:

  • Membership fee remains at €50

  • Brendan Johnson was thanked for again sponsoring the Society pocket calenders.

  • Sean & Jackie Mc'Cabe of the Snug House were thanked for looking after us during the year.

  • This years courses were booked for 36 players, and hopefully there won't be any problems with outings being over subscribed.

  • An improvement in slow play needs attention and the Committee undertook to address this.

  • The next Portugal trip in 2018 was broached, and for an extra night the cost would be €120 approx over the 2016 price but will be researched further.

  • David Dolan won the free members draw for second year in row.

As there was no further business, the meeting ended.

Kind Regards,
John O'Connor
Secretary
